The Benefits of Organic Baby and Toddler Clothing

June 27th 2007 by Dr.MOZ in Healthy Kids, Organic Products

Today’s healthy dose of fun covers the benefits of baby and toddler wear made with organic cotton. Sure…the topic might seem a little “crunchy” at first, but here’s the straight dope from your favorite moose M.D.

The Health Factor
Conventional cotton used to create fabrics like baby clothing are the most heavily sprayed crops on earth. Consider the following factoids regarding toxic chemicals used to grow commercial cotton:

Cancer Causing Chemicals: 5 of the top 9 pesticides (Naled, Dicofol, Cyanide, Propargite, and Trifluralin) used to grow cotton in the USA are known to cause cancer.

Cotton in the USA: Approximately 25% of all pesticides used in farming in the US, are used in growing cotton.

Ripple Effect: Farm workers in the USA suffer from approximately 300,000 pesticide-related illnesses each year, and it is believed that over 10,000 people die each year in the world from cancer related to pesticides.

One T-shirt: Approximately 1/3 of a pound of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides are used to grow enough conventional cotton needed to create one T-shirt.

The Fun Factor
Baby wear and other organic products made with natural and certified organic cottons offer pesticide-free alternatives. To be “certified organic”, the cotton grown must be grown on farms that have been pesticide free (and free of synthetic fertilizers) for a minimum of three years. Organic baby clothes do tend to cost a little more due to the extra work involved, but prices are becoming more competitive and the new styles are hard to resist. 1. PD Says:

I know from first hand that organic cotton clothing is a great way to naturally alleviate some skin conditions. That is an easy call since conventional methods of cotton production use such harsh chemicals. I have heard some varying numbers on the amount, but everyone agrees the chemicals just are bad for the earth and us. “Traditional cotton production also attributes to 25% of worldwide insecticide use and 10% of worldwide pesticide use.”
