Baby Monitors with Color Video, Audio, and the Extras!

Summer Infant Monitor

Dear Dr.MOZ,

My wife and I inherited a great collection of baby gear when we had a baby boy, but I can’t stand the baby monitor we were given. The first problem is, the audio quality is very poor and we hear more static than baby coos. The second issue is, I want a video feed in addition to the audio without setting-up an elaborate video system. With all the tech gadgets on the market, it seems like we should be past the “walkie talkie” days with the baby monitors. Any advice on a portable baby monitor with video features that work in the dark?

Thanks Dr.MOZ!

Hello Digital Daddy,

There are quite a few monitors with video capability on the market, but I think Baby Quiet Sounds with the color video monitor will be a good fit for you. You’ll pay more for the video features (color monitor, night vision, etc), but it sounds like you received a lot of free baby gear so perhaps the price tag (just under $200) won’t scare you off. Found in baby stores and boutiques everywhere including Mommy’s Thinkin’ in the US and the TOTALBABY shop in the UK!

Here are a few of the many handy features:

Screen: color 2.5-inch TFT screen in light and black/white when in “night vision” mode

Portable: belt clips for carrying, and stands for counter-top use

Wall Mounts: includes wall mounts if permanent placement is preferred

2 Channels: to help minimize outside interference

Visual Sounds: shows noise when video screen is turned off

Others: adjustable brightness, volume, and automatic power saver features will all come in handy

Although there have been major improvements in baby monitors over the years, you’ll probably still experience occasional static and some of the usual complaints with any product you choose. Baby monitors use radio frequencies and have been known to pick-up signals from nearby monitors (and cordless phone audio) from others in the neighborhood. I’ve never heard of a totally flawless baby monitor, but perhaps some of our parents out there can recommend a few of their favorites in the comments section below.

Good luck Digital Daddy!
