Which Baby Sunblock is Best? – E.W.G.’s Top 5 Ratings
July 19th 2007 by Dr.MOZ in Family Safety, Healthy Kids, New Parents
The sun is blazing throughout the US this summer which means that most of you are slathering sunblock on your babies every chance you get. Unfortunately, some baby sunscreens and sunblocks aren’t as protective as you might think. The advertised SPF levels are often misleading and the sunblocks typically only cover UVB rays. Many don’t protect against harmful UVA rays at all, and there are currently no FDA requirements regulating the description of UVA protection on a product’s label.
Even worse perhaps is the fact that many sunblocks contain chemicals linked to cancer, developmental problems, and allergies. Some ingredients are damaging on their own, while others break down in the sun and which can add new risks beyond sun damage. Luckily, the Environmental Working Group has been testing for the best and the worst on the market and have a fantastic database available rating most leading cosmetic products including baby sunblocks.
The Top 5 Baby Sunblocks on the EWG’s List:
- UV NATURAL SPORT SPF 30+
- LAVERA SUN BLOCK BABY & CHILDREN SPF 30
- AVON SUN BABY SUNSCREEN LOTION (SPF 40)
- BABY BLANKET SUNBLOCK SPRAY LOTION FOR BABIES (SPF 45), 2006 release
- BABY BLANKET SUNBLOCK SPRAY LOTION FOR BABIES (SPF 45), 2005 release
