Moving with Kids – Tips for a Single Dad
July 20th 2007 by Dr.MOZ in Fatherhood, GoodFather Fridays, Tech and Web
Dear Dr.MOZ,
I’m a single dad with a one-year-old daughter and my employer wants me to relocate to a different state. I’m up for the move, but I’d like to arm myself with as much information as possible about the different neighborhoods in the area before house-hunting at the end of the month. Any tips that you or the GoodFather could provide would be greatly appreciated!
Yours,
Shawn

Hello Shawn,
Moving with a little one can be tricky. I occasionally have friends of the family relocate to employ their…special services, so I know how much work it can be. I’m not sure where your move will take you, but here are a few resources provided by my associate here that I think you’ll find useful where ever you go.
Walk Score: This new website will need a little work before it delivers completely
accurate information, but you’ll find it to be a useful way to summarize a neighborhood. Walk Score is designed to calculate the “walkability” of an address by locating the parks, stores, restaurants, and other services important to a potential new resident. Here’s an example using the Brady Bunch house/neighborhood in Hollywood CA.
You’ll may want to ignore the “walk score” provided because distances and business information used to calculate the scores are based on sometimes outdated Google APIs. On the other hand, it provides a great overall look at any neighborhood you are considering moving to. Walk Score should get better with time so check it out.
The GoodFather’s Dad Group Directory: A shameless attempt to promote my own dad group directory, or one of the most complete directories available? You be the judge…although I’d say it is a little of both. In any case, our dad group directory has a list of online resources and dad groups organized by state. Meeting other fathers your new location would be great way to learn more about the area and make a few new friends while you are at it. The GoodFather’s Dad Group Directory is updated weekly and we recently added dad groups outside the US, so my international directory keeps getting better!
So there you have it Shawn…a little advice from one GoodFather to another. Thanks for the question and don’t forget to check the comments bubble above during the weekend to see if others have useful tips for you.

I believe that walk score is cool, but nowadays more and more people prefer to drive cars. Homes are often located in an area where some establishments are easier to get to by car than on foot. I’ve recently found a type of service on http://drivescore.fizber.com which is called Drive Score. It shows a map of what establishments are in your neighborhood and calculates a Drive Score based on the number of places within a convenient driving distance. It doesn’t mean that drive score is better than walk score – they are equal and both necessary in the modern world!
