The First Bike - Trikes, Ride-ons, and the LIKEaBIKE!

The First Bike!

Dear Dr.MOZ,

My granddaughter is beginning to get jealous watching her older brother riding his new bike, but she is still too small to learn to ride a regular bike. Could you recommend a bike that could be used around the house that would help her develop her balance and leg-strength? I think she would love a “big girl bike” of her very own!

Thanks Doc,
Jenna

Hi Jenna,

There are quite a few options that would each be great for a toddler to develop her strength and riding-skills around the house. Here are a few fun rides for offered at various prices that I think your “big girl” will love your years to come!

The Tiny Trike: The Tiny Trike features a wide wheel base and durable grip tread for safety. They are made with a genuine wood body, chrome handles, ergonomic handgrips, and molded comfort seats. If that wasn’t already enough, she’ll love the streamers and ringing bell! (available for $59.95 at Train-Station.com)

The Wheely Animal Ride-on: The Wheely Animals (Wheely Bug shown) are handmade and built to last with heavy duty wheels and a

padded body allowing for comfortable play all day long. This rid-on toy allows for multi-directional movement which is great for developing strength and coordination. (available for $79.95 at WoodenToys.com)

LIKEaBIKE: The LIKEaBIKE Jumper is a fun way to introduce bike riding to a new rider. Although it looks “like a bike”, your granddaughter will use her feet to push herself around the house. There are no pedals with the LIKEaBIKE, so your new rider will roll around with ease while developing the balance and strength needed to make the step up to larger bikes. (available for $245 at Milkshop.com)

Double Step Retro Trike: You’ll recognize the retro trike’s all-steel construction as the same bike you enjoyed as a kid. The retro trike is the best priced option featured in today’s post and comes with rubber tires, steel spoke wheels, streamers, and advertises child-safe (lead-free) paint. Best of all, it grows with your granddaughter with an adjustable seat and handlebars. It will withstand years of riding abuse and shipping is currently free in the continental US! (available for $49.95 at PedalcarsAndRetro.com)

Thanks for the question Jenna and have a great time with your new wheels!

Have fun and stay healthy,

Dr.MOZ

We decided to get the likeabike jumper too for our boy after taking him to the store to check them out - he wasn’t so fond of the wooden ones. It really is the perfect bike for a toddler and I am constantly telling other parents where we got it!
