I'm a TA working in the schools.
I have worked with a lot of special needs students.
What I found that helps is a social stories.
I make the story short.
Type a little story with as much pictures as I could.
Ex. Hi my name is -- -------. I have to go to school on a school bus. My mom or dad makes sure I get on the right bus.
At the end of the day my teacher puts me on the right bus.
I don't ever have to worry.
My bus driver will always get me home safe.

Hope this will help others

Mommy or Daddy will be waiting for me.

The first day for our 5-yr old daughter was definitely the hardest (for her and us!). My wife stood with her outside the daycare centre and, fortunately, another child that our girl knew was also waiting. I was waiting for her at the dropoff point in front of her school (and she knew to look for me there) to make sure she knew where to go once off the bus. I'm not saying that doing this on the first day is all that's required. Each child adapts to the routine differently and for every child that is ok with it there are many more that have difficulty with the whole thing,

I've never actually done it with my kids, but I hear that some schools allow the parents to ride with their kids. This would only work if you lived close to the school (could be a long walk back), but I thought I'd throw it out there.

My little guy is still too small, but some of our friends met their son at the school for his first ride. I'm sure it depends on the child, but they only had to do it once because the bus became fun after that.
