Flying with Baby: Tips and Tricks from the Moose M.D. !
August 20th 2007 by Dr.MOZ in Healthy Kids, Tech and Web, Travel Safety
This Monday’s prescription is for all the parents flying with babies in the near future. Flying with a baby (and tons of baby gear) is never easy, but you’ll be a little more prepared thanks to the tips and tricks the doctor has waiting up his sleeve.
1) Timing is Key: If you can, take flights that match your baby’s sleeping pattern. A sleeping baby is a happy baby!
2) Using Services: You may already know to have your stroller tagged at check-in, but did you know that most airlines will allow you to “reserve” the seat next to your without paying for it? You won’t get seat if the flight is full, but you’ll love the extra room if it isn’t!
3) Ask the Guru: Check with the SeatGuru to see in-depth (seat specific) comments describing everything from legroom to in-flight amenities that would make a difference to you and your baby. www.SeatGuru.com
4) Air Pressure: Babies also experience ear pain from elevation variations, so you’ll
want to give your baby a bottle or pacifier to help release the pressure during take-offs and landings. You’ll obviously need the diaper bag with you on the plane, so plan to have all the usual diaper gear along with favorite toys for diversions during the flight.

5) Safety: You might assume that most injuries occur during take-off and landing, but in reality 90% of all injuries occur in flight. Most of these injuries are due to turbulence which is why parents are encouraged to secure their children through the flight. One of the most popular security vests on the market for infants and toddlers is the Baby B’Air vest which is fastened to the parent’s seatbelt to keep baby secure while in the air (not of takeoff, taxi, or landing use). Available through Baby B’Air’s retail partners.

This is actually a really helpful guide. I’m flying with my niece this month and am not looking forward to it.

My father was really old fashioned when I was little. I would dab a little whiskey on our tongues when we’d fuss on the train. But that was back in the 40s.
