Mattel, Neeto, and d-Scan Recalls, and Baby Naming Gets Scientific
September 5th 2007 by Dr.MOZ in Family Health, Recalls, Dangerous Toys
Hello moose fans! There’s a lot going on out there in the world of baby products and services, so we’ll start with something “old” and something “new“. As always, let us know what you think by joining the conversation with a of the comments bubble above.
The “old” is yet another collection of recalls covering toys, cribs, and bunk beds.
- Tuesday night’s recall from Mattel covers 844,000 Chinese-manufactured toys for excessive levels of lead paint. We’ll likely see an increase in recalls as the toy manufactures tighten-up their quality control process, but hopefully this will result in fewer products making it out to our kids in the long run. Until then, you can keep visiting us for updates or read one of our past posts on how to receive warnings straight from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. (see CSPC website for full Sept recall list or info below)
- A recall getting less coverage is Netto’s recall of approximately 400 “Moderne” and “Loft” Cribs. No injuries have been reported, but there is an issue with the side rail spindles separating from the top rail posing an entrapment and strangulation hazard. (more from the CPSC)
- Approximately 500 Jubee Bunk Beds distributed by d-Scan have been recalled due to collapse hazard. (more from the CPSC)
The “new” is a strange and interesting new service called The Right Baby Name. It advertises itself as the only scientific method for choosing your baby’s name. It uses a step-by-step process asking your for your name idea, due date, baby gender, ethnicity, and other details. It then gives you a full analysis of the baby name by describing the uniqueness of the name and the “implications of your choice” on your child among other details.
Expecting parents can visit the website, purchase a book, and/or buy a membership which offers name reports, comparisons, analysis, and a downloadable audio book. (more at www.therightbabyname.com)

Have fun and stay healthy,

There was a segment on one of the news shows last week about a woman who chooses your baby’s name for you based on what you want their future vocation to be. The things people will pay for just amazes me.

I think something needs to be done to monitor the production of children’s products to help reduce the number of product recalls. Unfortunately, many recalls are issued after several kids have already been hurt by the defects.

Baby names are so hard to pick. My wife and I went back and forth about our baby’s name during the entire pregnancy.
PS She won after I saw the delivery!
