What’s Shakin’ this Week Baby? Caffeine-Misscarrage Link
January 22nd 2008 by Dr.MOZ in Health News, Pregnancy
A controversial new study by Kaiser Permanente published in the journal of Epidemiology and the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology claims that absolutely no caffeine should be consumed by pregnant woman. Although some suggest that the low number of women included in the study (1,063) make the findings statistically insignificant, their research claims that women between weeks 1-16 of pregnancy drinking 200 mg or more of caffeine (only one-and-a-half cups of coffee) have twice the risk of miscarriage compared to women with no caffeine consumption. They report that the blood flow to the placenta is decreased due to caffeine constricting the blood vessels, which in turn may cause miscarriages.
The findings are still being debated among those in the medical community, so hopefully
we’ll see larger studies on the topic in the near future. Read more about the study in the San Francisco Chronicle or let us know what you feel about the recent findings by clicking on the comments bubble above.
Have fun and stay healthy,

Addicted to online bingo…or coffee? Sorry, couldn’t resist after reading your username. Caffeine in other forms (like soda) counts as well, so you might both want to cut it out of the daily routine before attempting to get pregnant. It certainly is hard to do, but it might help her make the transition if you were on board as well. Congratulations with the upcoming marriage!

I didn’t know that caffeine is so deadly?
How many cups before you reach the danger level?

It’s not surprising. Caffeine has many side effects such as increased blood pressure.

Hasn’t caffeine always been on the list of food/ingredients to avoid? My sister was a 2+ cup/day coffee drinker before she got pregnant. In fact, she quit when she was TRYING to get pregnant.

Getting my wife to stop drinking coffee with caffiene is going to be tough to do. After I show her this post, I’m sure she will see the light.

This is interesting news as the number of women who drink a lot of coffee may well benefit from this study.

Caffeine is a kind of drug, very light indeed, but still a drug. Every morning, if I don’t drink a cup of coffee, I don’t feel well. I feel dizzy and morose.Caffeine increased my blood pressure, too. I’m addicted to coffee!

Well, I think that article written here is quite clear: no more coffee for pregnant women. They will have to give up coffee for a while and then come back to it if they still need it. You should always do the best to protect your unborn child from dangers.

This makes sense in the as caffeine does restrict the vessels and blood flow in normal people, so if it does this to the fetus it could have negative effects. I believe that pregnant woman should cut out any and all intake of chemicals while pregnant just to be safe.

I think they should do this study again with a larger number of subjects. Even though they have done this study with a low number of subjects, i do think this is true.

It is really true. Caffeine has a high risk in having a premature birth and miscarriage. Many impregnated women are ready to be cautious as possible to reduce their chances of losing their baby.
Strenuous activity as well helps you alleviate your risk of miscarriage, but with proper diet and exercise, this manner will easily be prevented. Best thing to have an exercise is at the convenience of your own home using your own home gym machine. With this kind of set up, you will not only deliver your baby spicy and sweet, but will also make your body recover faster after delivery.

Caffeine well known as one type of drugs and drugs is not good for pregnant women as well as for the baby inside. However, hope that we get the solid finding and result soon. I enjoy your post. Keep up the good work!

They are always saying things about caffeine, a little is good for you or a little is bad for you really just never know. But when it come to any type of substance and a pregnancy women should cut them out if not altogether. Thanks for this post !

I have seen the effects of coffee on my life alone. So I can only imagine what it does to a pregnant woman and he baby. Its not a bad idea to refrain from all chemicals that alter the body whether or not you pregnant.

I agree that further study needs to be undertaken, but to be on the safe side, pregnant women should avoid it for now.
