CPSC Recall: 24,000 Munire Furniture Cribs
February 29th 2008 by Dr.MOZ in Cribs, Recalls
Yesterday’s recall seems to be getting fairly good media coverage, but there are 24,000 recalled cribs on the market so I thought it was worth a post. Please click the link to below to learn more:
- Recalled Cribs: Majestic Curved Top and Flat Top Cribs, Essex Cribs, Brighton/Sussex Cribs and Captiva Cribs
- Hazard: The cribs fail to meet the federal safety standards for cribs. The four support brackets on the mattress support spring are too long. The brackets prevent the spring from lowering to the full 26 inch minimum height in its lowest position, allowing children inside to crawl over the railing, posing a fall hazard.
- Description: The cribs are wooden. The recalled cribs include: Majestic Curved Top cribs with model number 9500; Majestic Flat Top cribs with model number 9000; Essex cribs with model number 7100; Brighton/Sussex cribs with model number 9100 and Captiva cribs with model number 5100. Only cribs with manufacture dates between November 1, 2005 and November 1, 2007 are included in the recall.
- Locating Model Numbers: The crib model number is printed on the white label on the bottom inside of the right side rail. The crib manufacture date is printed on either the white label near the model number or on the white label located on the bottom of the headboard. Cribs with a green sticker on the mattress frame are not included in the recall.
Approximately 24,000 of these cribs were sold nationwide between November 2005 and November 2007 for $400-$600. No injuries have been reported, but crib owners are asked to stop using the furniture and contact Munire Furniture (at 866-586-9639, www.munirefurniture.com) to receive replacement spring brackets.
Have a safe weekend!

At least they addressed the issue rather quickly. It looks good when a company announces its own short comings and makes the decision to recall themselves,

A company owning up its mistake on its own accord without receiving any complaints is I believe a highly respectable and responsible company. The fact that no accidents have occurred with their cribs, they could have easily avoided the trouble thye are going through for hte sake of hte customers. This speaks highly of them.

Good call by the manufacturer. Now they need to be more careful in the future.

Thanks for posting all of these numbers. I hate to think how many of these will be resold in garage sales or in general just not come out of “circulation”. It is a difficult and expensive task for a company to pick them up. Right now I am thinking of baby furniture that is not imported with higher quality standards. Further I am now a fan of unfinished furniture for babies since they will be gnawing on it.

wow that’s crazy… hope they are more careful.

24,000 holy cow! I had no idea it would be this high. And yep by now they’re probably floating around at garage sales.

That is kind of scary when you think about the number. Not easy to recall these as it normally gets sold off and borrow to other people once the baby is old enough to have their own bed.

This is scary I hope the will be more careful in the future.

I bought one and did not know until recently that it was recalled – the manufacturer only sends ‘fix kit’ – so it is not really a ‘recall’ of 20,000+ cribs. I must say that after paying $700 and get this kind of crap is really annoying.

Scary to think that these could still be in use around the country especially since there are babies involved. The comment about the garage sales scares me the most since those people would be clueless to the saftety dangers of the used crib they just picked up….

“No injuries have been reported…” I hope it stays that way. When babies are involved, everyone should be vigilant especially the manufacturers so that a thing like this will not happen again.

This is a great post. Thank you for putting this post out there for all of us. It has helped a lot especially for those who have a little-know-how about furniture.

I think it’s a shame that you find such information only after you inquire about your furniture upgrade!. I wanted to convert my son’s crib to “big boy bed” so i needed the converter set with rails. While searching for these items, I learn that there is a re-call. I purchased my furniture in August 2006. My son chewed the top of his crib while in his teething stage. I actually called to have replacement/touch up paint for this. Still now, NO ONE notified me of this re-call. I am a very unhappy, concerned parent. I will be having my son tested.
