The XO-2: Tomorrow’s School Book?

The XO-2

The One Laptop per Child (OLPC) project was created to give children in developing nations an opportunity to learn with the help of an innovative little laptop, the XO. Judging from the new XO-2 demo given in yesterday’s OLPC Global Workshop, new versions of the little laptop may one day become the tool of choice for wealthy nations as well.

Equipped with touch sensitive (indoor/outdoor) displays, horizontal/vertical flexibility, and lower 1 watt power consumption, the XO-2 may be our first look at the next generation’s school “book”. The original XO sold approximately 600,00 units to date, but we can expect much more from the XO-2′s release in 2010 if they can offer it for anywhere near the advertised $75.

Have fun and stay healthy,

That’s kind of interesting. The original intention of the OLPC was to close the gap between haves, and have-nots from a technology perspective. Obviously it makes sense to offer a great value in the XO-2 to anyone willing to pay for it. I’m not sure it really helps close the gap. Sometimes it’s possible to be too smart for your own good.

That is one cool notebook. I would want one if I were a child. I hope this works for that company and the children, it would be great to see some results.

How much coverage is this thing going to get? Can everyone just pause for a second and instead of saying how “neat” it is ask: A: Is this a useful venture? B. And does this toy ultimately lead to a better educated child?

I think this is a great product for developing nations to gain computer literacy. I wonder if we are pushing computers at kids in developed nations though. How young is too young for kids to start learning PC skills? I have no objections to them learning per se, I’d just rather kids were outside playing in the fresh for as long as possible.

Maybe i don’t like the idea that my kids will have computers in school :-/.
