A Dear IKEA Letter from Dr.MOZ
September 3rd 2008 by Dr.MOZ in Kid Furniture, Toddler Products
Dear IKEA,
Parents around the world (or those near IKEA stores) would love it if you would make kid’s stuff like this. I know that you think that you already do…but you really don’t. Note the way that “Box Chair Storage” uses clean Swedish-like design, but it also helps saves space when not in use. It would break down easily into one of your flat cardboard boxes, and I’m confident that even I could assemble it with an Allen wrench.
I’ll admit that your baby/kids products are priced to sell, but most seem to be made of molded plastic. This is great for bath tubs or “potties”, but I think it’s time to start thinking outside of the yellow box. To pull off this new series, you may need to sign a few partnerships with non-Scandinavian designers like Philippe Starck. I’d also recommend that you shave a few corners off your pieces here and there for safety reasons. I know this might add to the cost, but you would be surprised at how much Americans will spend to keep their kids from bleeding. I can’t say for sure, but “no bleeding” probably sounds pretty cool in Swedish and it might be a fantastic title for the proposed line!
Your friend,
Dr.MOZ

Hysterical! I agree!

I can’t agree more! I hate it when my child runs into corners. I had to take our coffee table out of the living room till she was no longer a wobbly walker.

Great idea! It’s about time they start making kid friendly furniture.

Excellent post! “Nej Bleking” sure does sound like a pretty stylish range of kids furniture! I can see these products doing well in North America.

i really like those desks that you can also store in for all the little child toys and books, it really makes a lot less clutter around my house!

the desks are fabulous.
I love Philippe Starck as a designer and am also a fan of Ikea (sometimes on a limited basis). I think the one challenge is that anything with the label “Stark” associated with it is going to automatically command 10x the price because of his established namesake in the design arena.
ikea has some great designers however Ithink P. Starck takes things to a totally different level.

I think this type of furniture is the future. This is the second time today I have seen transformer furniture.

My brother’s wife just had a baby and thought that this type of furniture would make a great gift for them. They have a small home and not a lot of room for the baby. Does anyone know where you can find a foldable bed?

this furniture would look great in my pool room. since theres not much room for anything but my pool table these little compartment desks could store things that i need for that room without taking up much space!

That box chair storage looks like it has sharp corners on it.

Great letter! I’d sign it too. But I agree with biw. It looks like the box chair storage has sharp corners. Give me a file though and I would fix that easily and repaint it to make it child-friendly.

How I wish I were a kid again! Growing up isn’t as much fun as I thought it would be. Life seems incomplete without kids around. There is no way one can dislike anything associated with children. It’s just sheer joy.

Great letter! I would also like to add that the uk would be interested in a decent design for chidrens furniture. i think it could be good business. If they wanted the uk to be involved in the design process i would recommend http://www.awhiteroom.com/

Top class letter. I agree with you – They should take your advise.

I totally agree with you, parents always take their kids safety into consideration before buying anything let alone furniture. It would also be a great way to make sure their products don’t get recalled due to too many injuries. Hopefully they look at all the positive feedback your getting, obviously child safety is a market they should tap into!
