Reminder: Keep Meds Locked and High!
September 30th 2008 by Dr.MOZ in Family Health, Family Safety, First Aid and Safety
Safe Kids USA reports that more than one million children ages 5 and under are accidentally poisoned, and 40 percent of these tragic poisonings are from prescription drugs and medications. One easy way to keep the home safe is to put all medications in lock boxes (up high), and it’s best to do this before your baby can stand so you won’t be caught off guard. Your little guy will develop quickly, and before you know it…he’ll be running laps around the house and sticking everything he can find in his mouth. Any wall-mountable box with a lock will do the trick, but you can’t go wrong with a cool Cross Design Medicine Cabinet like this one from Heal’s.
While you are childproofing your own home, don’t forget to focus on other family members’ homes as well. Over 20 percent of prescription drugs ingested by toddlers under 5 belong to people that don’t live with the children, so make sure that the babysitters and grandparents are prepared too.
Have fun and stay healthy,

Not a very good statistic! As to me it is better that these drugs and medications aren’t be at home at all

Thanks for bringing this crucial subject to our attention yet again. Accidents happen in an instant. We can become so complacent, ignoring the dangers that lurk inside bottles. Another important point is not to equate pills with sweeties. That can also help to make colorful medications a ‘must-have’ for little hands.

Omg, those statistics are really bad. I really didn’t know that those numbers are so high. But, truly, i suppose that people overlook those tiny “unimportant” things, and by leaving them unsecured for children.

Yes, it can never be mentioned too often. It only takes a moment for something tragic to happen.

it is better to put it in a safe box. somewhere that they can’t see. this is really a good reminder for parents who are not at home most of the time.

This lock box will keep many children safer. You could even put your medicine in a high cabinet for safekeeping. Inform the babysitters and others as well!
