100% Unnatural: The Suima Robotic Crib
February 3rd 2009 by Dr.MOZ in Cribs, Strange Products, Tech and Web
There have been so many natural parenting products hitting the market over the past year, it’s easy to forget that there still people out there working on the next big unnatural baby product. That wasn’t a typo, it really doesn’t get much more unnatural than the Suima Robotic Crib designed at Kyuushuu University in Japan. Unnatural features include:
- Baby Cry Sensor: microphone built into the inside frame detects crying baby
- Automatic Sway: when cries are detected, the automatic sway movement is activated…mimicking a parent’s sway by moving the crib side-to-side every 1.8 seconds
- Safety Net: unlike the traditional crib with slats, the sides of the Suimia are lined with netting
- Remote Control: heaven forbid you have to actually move
Call me “oldschool”, but there’s a huge list of reasons why I wouldn’t use the Suima crib. Instead of pointing-out the obvious, I’d prefer to keep an eye on the comments section to see what you think. I’ll just close this post off with the fact that babies cry for quite a few good reasons…beyond being tired. Too bad the Suima crib doesn’t feature self-cleaning safety nets. Something tells me that there are a few new parents in Japan thinking the same thing right about now.
Have fun and stay healthy,

That is so cute! I never knew those types of cribs existed.
They should rename that: “The automated Mom”

This could be a real hit if it actually does what it is intended too.

So if the crib has a cry sensor so it will automatically react by swinging the baby whenever it cries, what is this teaching the child? I would love to see the consequences of keeping a child in this contraption and how they turn out as preschoolers.

FOR ONE THIS WOULD BE GREAT FOR BABIES WHO NEED TO BE WHEENED OFF BEING HELD ALL THE TIME. I HAVE A FRIEND THAT CANNOT JUST “PUT” HER BABY TO BED HE NEEDS TO BE ROCKED AND SHE IS NOT COMFORTABLE PUTTING HIM TO SLEEP IN A SWING. THAT IS HER OWN FAULT BUT THERE ARE JUST SOME REALLY NEEDY BABIES OUT THERE.
FOR TWO, IF A BABY IS HUNGRY OR NEEDS IT’S DIAPER CHANGED IT WON’T JUST GO BACK TO SLEEP. SO I AM NOT AS CONCERNED WITH WHAT IT IS “TEACHING” THE CHILD AS WITH WHAT IT IS TEACHING THE MOTHER. MOMS NEEDS TO KNOW HOW TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN A CRY FOR FOOD AND A CRY FOR ATTENTION.
