New Vitamin E and Obesity Studies

The studies are in and the researchers are giving a lot of advice to pregnant women covering everything from Vitamin E to the dangers associated with being overweight. In short:

  • Vitamin E: A study by Dutch researchers is showing that the likelihood of having a baby with a heart defect was 70 percent higher for women with the highest vitamin E intake from diet alone. Including the use of a supplement to already high levels increased congenital heart defects by as much as 5-to-9 times as high. (see full story)
  • Obesity and Birth Defects: A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that babies born to obese mothers can increase the risk of serious birth defects. Babies born from overweight mothers have an increased risk of water on the brain “hydrocephaly” is up 68 percent, and heart problems shoot up by as much as 30 percent. Their advice is to seek pre-pregnancy counseling before you are pregnant to put yourself on a healthy nutrition plan. (see full story)

That’s a lot of statistics for one day, but I’ll be sure to post updates as additional information becomes available.

So which means that eating too much green vegetables can be bad? that is strange. It turns to be very difficult with all these studies to know what we should be eating!!

  8. OMR Says:

I don’t think too many vegetables will be bad, more like too many supplements.

true enough that we cannot totally rely on supplements to make give birth to healthy babies. What mothers need to do is to try all organic food and substances. I also believe mothers should maintain weight gain for the whole 9 months to a maximum of 25-30 lbs only. Therefore, being pregnant is not an excuse not to watch out what you eat. If you previously are overweight then weight gain should be kept at a minimum or they can be at risk for eclampsia. Doing so is also beneficial for both the mother and the baby. Their body can function optimally and whatever nutrients they’re getting can be well absorbed by their babies.

That’s great information. I hope I’m not at risk from all of the vitamin E I took as a teenager. While supplement vitamin E is easy to find knowing what foods have vitamin E is a bit more of a challenge.

  12. docran Says:

Yes the risk is very high for baby born from obese mother. As I know another risk is gestational diebetes.

Wow. I knew about obesity during pregnancy causing problems, but too much vitamin E?? I never would have thought that. I always thought the body just got rid of any excess vitamins. This is a very important article for all pregnant moms–or those trying to get pregnant! Thanks!
