Baby News: Most Popular Baby Names in 2008
May 8th 2009 by Dr.MOZ in Baby News, New Parents
The top 1,000 baby boy and baby girl names of 2008 have been tallied and were officially released by the SSA this morning. The 10 most popular names of last year include:
- Top Ten Male Names: (1) Jacob, (2) Michael, (3) Ethan, (4) Joshua, (5) Daniel, (6) Alexander, (7) Anthony, (8) William, (9) Christopher, (10) Matthew
- Top Ten Female Names: (1) Emma, (2) Isabella, (3) Emily, (4) Madison, (5) Ava, (6) Olivia, (7) Sophia, (8) Abigail, (9) Elizabeth, (10) Chloe
It looks like traditional names are still dominating the top 20 list, although we are seeing many new names jumping into the top 1,000. According to the SSA, the biggest jump in popularity was “Khloe” (spelled with a ‘K’) which moved up 469 spots in 2008 to it’s current position of the 196th most popular female name. What do you think folks, any surprises from the 20 listed above?
Have a great weekend!

I did not expect to see so many common names. To me it feels like more and more parents are trying to give their kids a new and original name all ending up with the same.

Very interesting. I never thought Jacob would be the most popular boy’s name. I’m also surprised Mark isn’t there.

I’m glad my favorite name belongs to the top ten. I like Mathew for the boys name. No doubt parents still want common names for their kids.

It’s really a very interesting article, I have never thought about child names before. Nowadays parents are giving new and unique names to their children I guess.

I’m quite surprised about Jacob being number one as well. I actually wrote an article about choosing names for your baby and posted it to my site recently. Although, as you say, some traditional names are very popular at the moment, the research I looked at showed that names like Edna and Walter are hugely out of fashion. Interesting stuff so thanks for posting.

It’s surprising to know that other common names I know are not listed there. This is very interesting to know.

I’m very surprised at the girl names. Isabella? Really? That doesn’t strike me as a common name whatsoever.

They are all beautiful names. I love more the “Joshua” name for a boy and for a girl I like the “Chloe”. But, it is very interesting if you have a name which is not common but beautiful..

That’s a very neat list to look at. I think Isabella surprised me the most. I was wondering if you know if the names like Alxeander and Joshua include kids named Alex and Jake, or if that would be considered a separate name?

My brothers names are matthew and michael. They are twins. I had no idea those names were so popular.
