The 2009 Kids Count Data Book

July 28th 2009 by Dr.MOZ in Family Health, Health News, Healthy Events

The Annie E. Casey Foundation’s “Kids Count” data book provides a statistical look at children’s well-being in the US, and the new 2009 book was released today showing mixed results. Although improvements were made with six of ten key indicators since the last

book’s release, it appears that we’re still attempting to catch-up to improvements made in the 1990′s.

  • Six Areas of  Improvement: infant mortality rate, child death rate, teen death rate, teen birth rate, high school dropout rate, and rate of teens not in school and not working
  • Four Areas of Worsening: low-birthweight babies, children living in families where no parent has full-time year-round employment, children in poverty, and children in single parent families

– ———

  • Best States for Children’s Well-Being: (1) New Hampshire, (2) Minnesota, (3) Utah, (4) Connecticut, (5) Massachusetts
  • Worst States for Children’s Well Being: (50) Mississippi, (49) Louisiana, (48) Alabama, (47) Arkansas, (46) Tennessee

Interesting information. Those are serious issues. But with the economy like this, parents would be having a harder time looking for stable employment, don’t you think?

“Four Areas of Worsening: low-birthweight babies, children living in families where no parent has full-time year-round employment, children in poverty, and children in single parent families”

It can be seen that all of these four areas are interrelated. I believe that the lack of sufficient funds, for whatever reason, is the main cause of these problems.

  5. karen Conroy Says:

Poverty is main cause of low-birth weight babies, children now living with there families in average state of living. Government should act and raise funds for this social economic problem, and local areas should also help the community
to build ways of solving this problem called “poverty”, Our children is the main victim here, lets make our world a better place to live with our children without poverty!

I totally agree with Karen Conroy. It’s really true that poverty is main cause of low-birth weight babies, children now living with there families in average state of living. I think every one should support them and raised their heads against govt. Thanks a lot for sharing. Keep blogging.
