You Review: The Flip UltraHD vs Kodak Zi8 HD

August 3rd 2009 by Dr.MOZ in Geeky Fun, New Parent Gifts, Tech and Web

The day when a new parent could pacify the extended family with an occasional baby picture is far behind us. With the convenience of today’s inexpensive and portable video cameras come high definition expectations…of the baby video variety. New parents are too busy cleaning behinds and changing diapers to edit videos and search for cables, so what

are they to do? I recommend the Flip UltraHD and the Kodak Zi8 HD! Standard features include:

Flip UltraHD:

  • MSRP $199.99, found at $179.99
  • 2x digital zoom
  • 8 GB
  • Microphone (internal)
  • Speaker (build-in)
  • Windows and Mac compatible
  • Rechargeable batteries included

Kodak Zi8 HD:

  • MSRP $199.99, found at $179.95
  • 4x digital zoom
  • 128 MB internal memory, SD/SDHC card expansion slot
  • Microphone (internal), also external jack
  • Speaker (build-in)
  • Windows and Mac compatible
  • Rechargeable batteries included

I know we have quite a few parents out there using one of the video cameras listed above, so give us your review because their stats are almost identical and both are easy to use.  Click on the bubble to open the comments box below to share your review for the Kodak Zi8 HD or the Flip UltraHD.

Have fun and stay healthy,

I think these are awesome cameras, and really cheap by the way.

  2. TylerW Says:

I have the Kodak Zi6 and it is really nice. Looks like the newer version, Zi8 is even better, I would highly recommend this product.

  3. Ginny Guide Says:

That is so true! I can’t believe how technology keeps improving daily. I honestly feel that I will never be able to keep up!

  4. ParentsElite Says:

I use Flip UltraHD, 8GB comes pretty handy. Digital zoom doesn’t mean that much (larger zoom = lower quality), so Kodiak’s 4x doesn’t count much. Both are good cameras and can’t go wrong which ever you choose.

  5. Daniel Pry Says:

I would go with the Flip UltraHD because it has a lot more memory without having to buy an extra component.

  6. A Says:

These both sound great! What a marvel way to capture all those everlasting baby memories in the instant of a click!

Will have to give these a try! Thanks for putting me onto the newest technology; I tend to lack sometimes.

  7. Lee Martin Says:

Great site. Looked around . Good tips on various things. The only thing i can say is to enjoy those babies when they are young, because they grow up too quick.

I want, no make that need, a flip. It seems like every blogger I know already has one, and it would just be so handy.

  9. Michelle Branno Says:

I have the kodak and find it very easy to use. It has plenty of friendly features and I just love using it.

I am also torn about which product to buy. I am really looking forward to reviews on this. I am hoping that many people will leave their comments.

    Hello,

Even though I’m not a parent yet I am a huge gadget lover for a while now and actually advised a close friend recently who’s become a new dad about the Zi 8 & the Ultra HD flip.

PLEASE BE ADVISED THOUGH THAT THE STATS AREN’T AT ALL SAME!

I’m a huge fan of the flip as it’s been out longer but the Zi 8 has totally trumped this battle as it has the following very notable superior features:

the Zi 8 will provide you with twice the resolution at full HD- 1080 p while the flip only gives you 720 p -this is HD but not as sharp as 1080

The Zi 8 allows for removable memory and since it is SD cards which are the cheapest form of memory to buy right now this is a HUGE advantage in the long run as you will be able to have memory available on the go if you have multiple cards.
Transferring the video footage to empty & ready the cam for next shooting will not be an issue with the Zi 8

There is optical image stabilization on the Zi 8 so no shaky videos which isn’t available on the flip.

In closing there are a huge list of improvements if you’d like to check a fav site of mine that does reviews on gadgets :

    http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2009/07/kodak-zi8-wallops-flip-with-1080p-image-stabiliser-and-sd-slot/

But you’d be much better off going for the Zi 8 –I know I’m planning to get one soon too.

Also I know it’s common to think that this review is by any employees of Kodak or Cisco but I am not affiliated with either company in any way just found this site while checking reviews and thought I’d help out some parents with my suggestions as someone who knows something about tech.

    cheers.

  12. S Purdy Says:

I’m always worried that the “Flip” mechanism on a phone like this will wear out to soon. What’s been your experience with that?

  13. James Says:

I was looking at the ZI8 a while back. The only thing that put me off was the size when I finally got one in my hand. I wasn’t too impressed because I was looking for something small that would fit easily in my pocket.

    James

  14. Sophia Says:

I am going for the Kodak. Though it has initially a lower memory, it does have an expansion slot and 4x digital zoom.

  15. The Baby Shopper Says:

I *had* a Kodak Zi8 HD and broke it after just dropping it once. #failwhale.

  16. James Hawkins Says:

I have the black Flip Ultra HD and love it. The only problems I had was it would not recharge the batteries.

  17. bb Says:

Yeah, There is optical image stabilization on the Zi 8 so no shaky videos which isn’t available on the flip.

  18. Anthony Musto Says:

I purchased this little camera before going to our Hawaii honeymoon. It served its’ purpose. It is VERY simple to use and allows you to take a ton of videos shots (even if they turnout to be useless) that you may not take with a more technical camera. It’s simple to upload to your computer and clear up space. The marketing for this camera boasts how it is easy to upload to the web and facebook. I wouldn’t agree. It is fairly easy but takes a few minutes or longer. I would suggest this camera for someone who wants to take informal clips, be prepared for surprises events or just to have some fun. I would not recommend for formal video you wish to cherish.
