Blankets for Swaddling in Warm Temperatures
September 14th 2009 by Dr.MOZ in Dear Dr.MOZ, New Parents
Dear Dr.MOZ,
The receiving/swaddle blankets I received at my baby shower all seem to be made from the same thick flannel and I’m worried that they’ll make my baby too hot. Do you know of any brands that offer blankets made from lighter fabrics for warmer
temperatures?
Thanks Doc!
Expecting Mom Terri
Hi Terri
You might want to visit a local baby store and ask for receiving blankets made from “jersey” fabrics. They’ll be lighter and will have a little more stretch than standard cotton blankets. Satsuma Designs offers a popular line made from 100% bamboo fabric, and you might also like the ergococoon by ergoPouch (seen above). Ergococoons are one-piece sacks made from light, organic knit fabric. They are machine washable and have built-in zippers (zipper top covered with fabric) which makes swaddling as easy as can be.
Readers may have blanket recommendations as well, so check back in a few days for additional tips in the comments section Terri. Thanks for writing the moose M.D. with your swaddle question!
Have fun and stay healthy,

This wouldn’t work to well with our daughter. No matter how tight we swaddle her, she always seems to wiggle an arm out and won’t settle until she has done so. Maybe they need to make one with just one arm hole! hah.

I’m a Mom to a nine week old little boy, and we use a Merino Kids Cocooi to swaddle him in at night.
Much like Terri, we were concerned that blankets made of thick polyester and other manmade fabrics would be too hot, so we went with merino since it naturally removes moisture from his body when he’s hot and keeps him snuggly when it’s cold.
We can’t live without the Cocooi and end up buying them as a shower gifts for our expectant Mommy (and Daddy) friends!

These are great! Of course, in Canada, there aren’t many months that call for a less-than-heavy fabric but it’s nice to find an alternative! Thanks for sharing this!

Now that`s strange. Looks like a caterpillar or something. Must work great though, there`s nowhere for the hot air to get out. I`ve had this problem with my kids for years, I come home after having taken them for a walk in their buggy, take their outer clothes of just to find out that they are somewhat cold for example on their feet, even if they have multiple layers of clothing on.. Maybe this can solve the problem..

Weather should be a deciding factor when choosing the fabric of a baby blanket or swaddle blanket. Babies living in South Florida, Nevada, Southern California, etc will need lighter fabric than those living in Canada and cold weather cities near the east coast. This sounds obvious but is often overlooked by baby shower shoppers. All blankets arent alike and new mom’s will have to return their gifts if the fabric makes baby too hot or not warm enough.

Some fabrics look heavier and new Moms mistake them for being too hot but some of the different fabrics breathe and are cooler than you may think.
