LIFE’s 30 Dumb Inventions: The Baby Cage
October 8th 2009 by Dr.MOZ in Strange Products
There have been so many ridiculous baby-related products to hit the market during the past few years, you might begin to believe that our generation invented stupidity. Buck-up parents, horrible ideas have been around for decades and the hilarious gallery 30 Dumb Inventions by LIFE is here to prove it.
“A nanny supervising a baby suspended in a wire cage attached to the outside of a high tenement block window. The cages were distributed to members of the Chelsea Baby Club in London who have no gardens, or qualms about putting a child in a box dangling over a busy street.”
Although the baby cage (above) makes my list for the absolute worst of the 30 Dumb Inventions, Beating Breasts from 1963 was a close second!
Have fun and stay healthy,

Never underestimate the value of the baby jail!

hmmm why would you need a roof to the baby jail? Don’t think they would be jumping out any time soon.

Something tells me that the roof in the cage was the 30′s version of a “safety feature” Chris. You’ve got to be safe when you suspend your baby in a cage outside of your window you know.

I think you suspend your baby in a cage outside

I have seen this picture somewhere on TV. I really like it. I think there are some messages behind it and we have to discover what the picture wants to say.
Quite interesting. Does anyone know what they wanted to advertise?

Great Post,
Is it to early to make Micheal Jackson jokes? I mean you know the guy had one of these since he loved hanging his kids over things! Sorry…

This cage doesn’t seem to be useful at all.

These inventions are hilarious

What the cage is for? Used to dry up the baby outside? kekekeke… Nice invention.

Is that a joke? I think it’s not. Why is the baby put in the cage? Maybe to practice himself to be in jail..

If this isn’t CRAZY, nothing else is. I wonder what they were thinking when they created this ridiculous invention. Yikes!
October 15th, 2009 at 1:16 am
Haha not only is it a dumb invention, but to put it outside the window? wtf were they thinking? Oh, wait, it was in a tenement…maybe a conspiracy to get rid of poor peoples’ babies?

This is about the stupidest idea I’ve seen!
October 19th, 2009 at 10:51 pm
That’s hilarious. I really got a good laugh out of the beating breast lol.

I love these quirky type of things from the 30′s-50′s. Reminds me of the old “duck and cover” film and the build your own bomb shelter days. Putting your baby out the window like a birdcage doesn’t surprise me all that much from that time period. Funny stuff.

Looks like a jail to me. What a poor baby. It’s a baby not an animal.

This is pretty insane. If there was anything like this around town today, the parents would be locked up for neglect. I def don’t see myself suspending my son from the window in a doggie kennel. Thanks for sharing.
