The XO-3 Touchscreen Tablet by OLPC
December 31st 2009 by Dr.MOZ in Tech and Web
As many of you may recall from my OLPC post in 2008, the low-priced laptops XO (and XO-2) were designed to give children in developing nations an exposure to technology and an opportunity to learn. The XO-2 was scheduled for release in 2010, but it appears that
OLPC (One Laptop per Child) has been back in the lab with an incredible new prototype in the works. Designed to use less power and create less material waste, the XO-3 is a sleek touchscreen tablet with an unbelievable target price of $75 per unit.
I’m not sure how they’ll manage the price, but I’m certainly rooting for them. The OLPC is a fantastic organization providing educational opportunities for children with little access to technology in the US and around world. Learn more about how you can get involved through the worldwide OLPCorps grassroots community website.
Have fun and stay healthy,
Dr.MOZ

Looks like a pretty cool tool for kids and learning. The price absolutely needs to be dropped so many kids can be able to get one.

Sounds like a lot of other concepts… Great in theory, but not practical in the real world. It looks like a lovely device and a fantastic idea, but I assume the screen is using some sort of OLED technnology (judging by the supposed 1W power usage and semi-flexibility). An 11-inch OLED TV costs around £3500 at the moment, and the main barrier keeping it from appearing in PC Monitors is the price at the moment. So yeah – $75 for that? Maybe in 10 years time.

That’s very thin but I think the price should be lower than that.

I wish the company success as it look like a wonderful teaching toy for children. I hope that the market bears the price of the unit like the author and commentators have stated.

Today’s toys are getting more techy. What happened to playing tag and hide and seek?

This looks really nice. And such a good idea – it is much easier to distribute knowledge and education through this. I think OLPC is doing a great job!
