Mesa: The School Desk of the Future?

January 7th 2010 by Dr.MOZ in School, Tech and Web

You might have noticed that I’ve been on a K-12 technology kick this week. First, with OLPC’s XO-3 learning tablet and now with the Mesa school desk by designer Phelan Miller which is designed to incorporate traditional “paper learning” with a wired, stackable table.

Future features for this futuristic desk includes:

  • Standard Grammar Tools: spell check, dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopedia.
  • Screen: simple touch screen with tab system and “freewrite” feature which improves handwriting.
  • Scanner: scans paper for saving and correcting lessons.
  • Connected: built-in wireless modems connect students to school server, teachers, or internet.
  • Size: fits two students per desk, modular design offering easy stacking/moving when not in use.

What do you think parents? Would you like to see your kids’ schools go completely digital (desks, ebooks, etc), or do prefer traditional teaching materials like books and paper?

Have fun and stay healthy,

Dr.MOZ

Of all the new innovations towards the children department, this desk seems quite useful and very technologically advanced. Cheers to the designer and of course to the author of the post for making this information available.

  3. Alan Says:

It’s a little more advanced than the one I had at school!

  4. Oliver Says:

This is better for early education and very helpful for building grammar in very early stages. Also, I hope this can help kids evelop their reading comprehension.

wowww!! i can’t imagine all the students in my country using this very sophisticated digital desk. It will significantly reduce the paper costs, but can someone explain the good and the bad sides of this technology? I’m just curious since this will effect the education process of our children…

Wow! what a cool desk. But is there no room for an ink well? :)

  8. Dr.MOZ Says:

It’s funny you should say that Tom. I hear Mesa desk 2.0 will feature an ink well and a pencil sharpener. Do kids still use pencils? ;)

  9. Sanju Says:

Oh..3rd generation school desk. Is there any way to cheat exams on this desk?

  10. tommi Says:

They sure didn´t look like that when I went to school.

I wouldn’t like to see my child sitting on this types of tables, I think old traditional styles is more comfortable. Children are not going in school, just to learn something, but also to make friends there. But, who know how schools will look like in 20-30 years. Maybe children will not have to go to school, maybe they will learn at home.

I advocate for using technology in the classroom – I ‘m using a smartboard for my lectures and the board is so indispensable, especially for learning-challenged students. Now with the Mesa school desk and the SMART board, you have this new way for the students to explore deeper into the materials themselves during or after the lecture.
