Light, Unbreakable, and BPA-Free: Stainless Steel Baby Bottles by Pura and Organic Kidz!
January 25th 2010 by Dr.MOZ in BPAs, Bottles and Cups
Stainless steel baby bottles are finally starting to hit store shelves and I like what I see so far. Parents ditched heavy glass bottles in droves when lighter plastic products became available, but the threat of bisphenol-A (BPA) found in many plastics sent many right back
to glass. Glass and plastic were the only options for sippy cups and baby bottles for decades, but now parents can choose new stainless steel bottles thanks to trailblazers Organic Kidz and Pura!
In their words:
- Pura: “Pura Stainless bottles are crafted from food service grade, electro-polished stainless steel. Our bottles are 100% BPA-free, do not leach harmful chemicals like plastic bottles, nor do they require funky chemical linings like aluminum bottles. And, unlike other bottles, our lids are also made from stainless steel because what good is using a non-plastic bottle if you are still drinking through a plastic cap? The paint used on the outside of the bottles is non-toxic and free of lead, phthalates, PVC, and BPA. The bottle and its components are dishwasher safe on the top rack and compatible with most Avent, ThinkBaby, Born Free, and Dr. Brown’s spouts and nipples.”
- Organic Kidz: “Our Stainless Steel Baby Bottles are a safe and practical alternative to plastic, aluminum and glass drinking containers. Made with kids and parents in mind, they are easy to hold and hard to damage. OrganicKidz Stainless Steel Baby Bottles: 4 and 7oz Narrow Necked single hulled bottles for easy warming, 9oz Narrow Necked vacuum insulated bottles so liquids keep cold for 5-6 hours, 4oz and 9oz Wide Mouthed single hulled bottles available, 2oz lid for easy measuring, BPA, PVC and Phthalate free, compatible with most narrow necked nipples, light weight and dishwasher safe, unbreakable and dent resistant, our products are packaged in environmentally friendly, recyclable cardboard.”
You’ve seen the advertised “pros” above, so you’re probably wondering what the “cons” could be aren’t you? Pura bottles won’t be available for a few more weeks, so I’m afraid I can’t give you an accurate review or product comparison. One thing I can say for sure is that you’ll pay a hefty sum for the benefits of stainless steel.
A pack of three 5 ounce Pura bottles are advertised for pre-order at $37.99. A similar 4 ounce baby bottle by Organic Kidz goes for $19.99…for a single bottle. Compare this to a three-pack of 5 ounce plastic bottles (also advertised as BPA-free) by The First years which sells for only $12.05. On the other hand, stainless steel will be around forever which would be a big plus if you plan to have multiple kids. They also won’t be found to include trace amounts of BPAs like some plastic bottles advertised as “BPA free” eventually did.
What do you think parents, would you be willing to pay more for BPA-free stainless steel bottles? Let me know what you think about the idea of stainless steel bottles in the comment box below.
Have fun and stay healthy,

Thanks for this information. It’s so alarming that our babies would intake BPAs when using plastic bottles. We care for the milk our babies would eat, but unintentionally and unknowingly we feed them such harmful substances. I will consider these stainless steel baby bottles. Hope more mothers would too.

My sister just gave birth to her first baby I will send this link to her. But for sure if ever she get some of these he need to get another sterilizer stainless are not microwave safe right

@ Michael – That’s true, you can’t use a microwave to sterilize the stainless steel bottles. On the other hand, if you were worried about BPAs you wouldn’t want to stick a plastic bottle (typically made from polycarbonates) in the microwave or in hot water. Studies have shown that bottles dunked in boiling water released BPA 55 times more rapidly than before being dunked in the hot water, which is why many parents have been going back to glass bottles.

That sounds like a great product. Won’t making bottles out of metal make them a bit heavy though?

Hi – no we use organicKidz bottles – not heavy at all, in fact they’re way lighter than glass. They have a new line coming out too – wide mouthed this time, so they have both kinds of bottles which is great. We have their thermal baby bottle too – they’re the only company that makes a thermal baby bottle. It kept water hot all day for our daughter’s formula so we could take her to the zoo or to a restaurant and not have to worry about asking for hot water (or worry whether its clean water). Now my daughter is almost 2 and we use it for cold milk – so we can have cold milk for her wherever we go – we’re going to Mexico in Feb. and our thermal organicKidz bottles are definitely going with us! We can sit on the beach all day and not worry about her milk spoiling! Pretty cool hey?

Great idea, would work great for us as we usually warm the water before mixing it all in the bottle.

I guess the only disadvantage will be that they are not clear – you won’t be able to see how much your baby had already had…?

Your information will be helpful to my sisters..as they are having kids. I’ll ask them to follow your blog.
