Over 2 Million Cribs Recalled: Jardine, Evenflo, Delta, Child Craft, Simmons, Million Dollar Baby
June 24th 2010 by Dr.MOZ in Cribs, Recalls
Am I alone, or is it shocking to anyone else that crib manufacturers can’t yet design safe cribs? Over 2 million cribs were recalled today (see list below) which makes me wonder, how hard could it possibly be to fuse four walls to a bottom base without creating a
deathtrap for children?
Nearly half of these cribs were manufactured 10 years ago. This means that hundreds of thousands of kids slept in these cribs for a decade before they were finally recalled.
- Bonavita, Babi Italia and ISSI Drop-Side Cribs Recalled (about 306,000 units)
- Bexco Enterprises, Inc., d.b.a. Million Dollar Baby Cribs Recalled (about 156,000 units)
- Simmons Juvenile Products Cribs Recalled (about 50,000 units)
- Jardine Drop-Side Cribs Recalled (about 130,000 units)
- Evenflo Recalls Drop-Side Cribs (about 750,000 units)
- Delta Recalls to Repair Drop-Side Cribs (about 747,000 units)
- Child Craft Brand Drop-Side Cribs Recalled (number unknown)
- Child Craft brand “Crib ‘N’ Double Bed” full size stationary-side cribs with dowel (about 40,000-50,000 units)
I’ll admit that I’ve run out of useful things to say about this topic after covering recalls on millions of cribs through the years and would love to hear what you think. Are we sacrificing safety for style, or is this the result of a major product testing/certification problem? Some feel we need to ban drop-side cribs, but truth be told…we can’t even depend on stationary-side cribs (see today’s Child Craft recall). Thanks for visiting baby fans, and don’t forget to leave your comments in the text box below!
Have fun and stay healthy,

I just don’t understand why their is not more regulations within testing and manufacturing cribs, stop looking at the profit margin and start paying more attention to the safety of the cribs.

ReCalling cribs even after 10-years is really unbelievable…but true. If these have been working perfectly for past ten years, have already proved the quality. But, above all is the safety, and style comes later. Thanks for such a bold step.

Why is it that it was done just right now? as mentioned that half of these cribs were manufactured 10 yrs ago. It could be possible that many kids had already had an accident or fall while staying or sleeping on these low quality cribs.

Wow, I’m with you in having a hard time believeing manufacturers still can’t get it right. We put a man on the moon folks! Thank for the list, and as always, the useful information!

The drop-side hardware can fail, causing the drop-side to detach from the crib or fall to the dropped position. When the drop side detaches, even partially, it creates a space in which an infant or toddler can become entrapped and suffocate or strangle. Drop side incidents can also occur due to incorrect assembly and with age related wear and tear. Additionally, when drop-side hardware fails and/or disengages, an infant or toddler can be injured by falling out of the crib.

exactly! i just don’t get it. why are not working on how to make a safer crib for babies.

The whole subject is shocking. I cannot believe that manufacturers do not test these cribs more extensively. I also think that a big problem comes in when we have to assemble to cribs ourselves. Incorrect assembly can cause injury to your baby. The stationary cribs recall you refer to has also been because they can be incorrectly assembled. There should be no margin for error in an item like this.

This issue doesn’t shock me coz I have also experience this problem at home and I really returned it to the store. Safety cribs for our babies should always be consider by the manufacturers. They should have strict quality control or testing for cribs.

How shocking! It makes you wonder what other products there are that may not be safe because there was that big pushchair recall recently as well after children got their fingers caught in the hinge.
