How They Roll: The Dutch Cargo Bike!
June 5th 2011 by Dr.MOZ in Bicycles
I don’t know about you, but when Spring approaches I dust off the helmet and pump-up the tires in preparation for family bicycle rides around town. To celebrate summer’s arrival, let’s see how baby-toting cyclists roll in other parts of the world.
Today’s feature is The Dutch Cargo Bike, popular in Holland and increasingly common in bicycle-loving nations like New Zealand and Australia. Not only does this innovative bicycle hold multiple children at a time, accessories are available to attach infant car seats! Flying around town with a toddler and a baby in tow would be a little daunting for most of us in the US, but few American communities are as bike-friendly (and safe) as Dutch cities.
Would your family enjoy riding a Dutch Cargo Bike? Let me know how your family will roll this summer in the comment box below, or drop a note on Dr.MOZ’s Facebook Fan page.
Have fun and stay healthy,
Dr.MOZ

Ahh I want one! This is SO cool! I wonder if I can get my hubby to pedal and I’ll sit in front?
There’s probably a weight limit but it looks so cool!

Wow, thanks Dr.Moz for posting this one! I wonder how these will catch on in Canada? We’re very slowly moving towards being more cycle-friendly in some big cities!

Seems very nice to me but don’t you think one should have to spend his/her whole energy to run this bicycle (with 2,3 kids)

This sort of bike is very comfortable for less traffic and more carrying. Nice Idea.

I’ve spend the last 6 months on the contract in the north part of the Netherlands and I haven’t seen so many bikes in one place. At first I saw it as a something strange because everyone out there has bike and they are using it (not store them in the basement)
. After a month I bought a Gazelle bike for me and you know what? It was one of the best decisions I’ve made. Its really great bikes and if you have a chance to get one don’t hesitate and do it. It will be a good thing for your health and savings.

Down here in Mexico transport bikes have been used for long time now, remember the “elotes”, esqueleto ate in Nacho libre, well traditionally those are broiled and commercialized in the streets on cargo bikes. These kind of bikes are good for the roads and easy to load bags and kids without any expense of gas or engine.

These bikes are so cool, and its a great way to get some exercise while still being with your kids, save some money on gas, and promote a healthy lifestyle. Very cool invention.

@Toronto Chiropractor
I think they will catch on eventually. It seems like more places in Canada (I’m thinking of Nova Scotia recently) are implementing more bicycle-friendly laws requiring motorists to give cyclists more space. I think such laws probably already existing in Toronto (been a few years since I last visited there!), but I think it will help to increase the popularity of cycling!

This is such a great idea. When my kids were in the bike trailer or the trail-a-bike, I was forever looking back at them, which isn’t so very safe. This looks to be a way better idea.
