New Zealand Bans Weird Baby Names
July 20th 2011 by Dr.MOZ in Baby Names, Baby News
Baby names have been getting a little strange lately and New Zealand’s names registrar has had enough. According to the Herald Sun, 102 baby names have already been banned from future use including titles as names (“Duke“, “Bishop“, “Baron“), punctuation marks,
and numbers like the rejected name “16“. You can forget about registering “Lucifer” too…yeah, even if it’s a family name. It’s already been rejected three separate times.
Have fun and stay healthy,

This is very funny. I think the first name can be banned, however, last name should follow the family name, no matter how weird it is.

@ Angelo – Apparently the New Zealand names registrar has the right…in New Zealand. It’s not a country I would expect to adopt rules like these, but I suppose they fell that they are protecting children.

The law in New Zealand is weird. Babies can be named anything in my country. We should have right to name our baby.

Hi! It’s interesting! In Japan, there was strange parents named their baby ” Akuma “, which means ” Devil “. And of course public office denied their applying.

Really an interesting fact about names..Banned names is a very good idea.:)
July 25th, 2011 at 11:42 am
Yes of course every one should have the right to do anything. its on Parents what they think good for their children.

Wow, I’m from the UK and I don’t believe they can refuse a name here; but I could be wrong. However, based on some of the ridiculous names that celebs give their kids, maybe they should try this in the UK.

It’s so funny. In my country, we have right to name our baby whatever we want.
In certain region it might sound weird and in another region it isn’t.
also there is no law for this.

whats wrong in naming the baby that their parents think?
July 26th, 2011 at 6:01 pm
Naming another person is the equivalent of giving them a lifetime gift.
A gift that helps define them within the family and to the rest of the
world. Celebrate the moment and give with love.

Adi’s right, whats wrong in naming their babies whatever they wanted to!
July 27th, 2011 at 12:52 am
The parents should have the right to name their child whatever they like.

How can they ban names, if someone wants to leave their child with a lifetime joke for a name why should they be stopped? haha, there have been a lot of new, ‘original’ well rather throw a dart at a dictionary names recently. I don’t get it, there are plenty of individual and relatively normal names out there why would you scar your kid for life?

i think banned names were a good idea for the sake of the kids!!

Names are an important key to what a society values. Anthropologists recognize naming as ‘one of the chief methods for imposing order on perception.’ ~David S. Slawson

Wow, I had no idea there were countries that could dictate what you name your child. I think Duke is kind of a neat name. As for punctuation marks – I don’t know why anyone would choose to put punctuation marks in their child’s name. And even weirder is the fact that they wanted the name 16. Maybe they were watching Seinfeld when George wanted to name his future child “Seven”.
July 28th, 2011 at 12:34 am
It’s funny. There are no restrictions in my country.
July 28th, 2011 at 4:10 am
Baby names should be free,no laws should be there.
July 28th, 2011 at 9:10 am
LoL They said NO to the weird names
It is so funny
July 28th, 2011 at 6:21 pm
Awesome. If you ask me, this rule is a great gift to the world. Even though (in the long run) a name does not effect the kind of person you grow up to be, ridiculous names are just too annoying.

Perhaps certain baby names should be banned, even if it’s just for the mental health of the child. Can you imagine how many times little “16″ is going to be beat up at the schoolyard? What sort of weirdness will “Blanket” get because MJ named him this ridiculous name? It’s something to think about.
