But wait…what’s this? The Traveller travel cot by Phil and Teds only weights 7 pounds. At 23 inches long, it will actually fit in an airplane’s carry on bin. The self-expanding mattress makes for a comfy portable crib, but zip the side open and Traveller magically turns into a play area. Add the UV mesh accessory to the top and Traveller can be used outside. That’s right, I said outside. You’ll actually be able to pick this portable baby product up…and walk outside! I’m still not sure how I ran across the handmade giraffe high chair, but it looked like something Blanket Jackson might be gifted so I thought I should give it a post. Don’t get me wrong…it would obviously take unbelievable artistic talent and lifetime of woodworking

experience to build something like this. That being said, if you wanted to give a kid giraffe-themed nightmares and an eating disorder…you would put him one of these before every meal.

Wow, I just ran into the Tessell on Babygadget and had to share the find. It’s a fun mat/ride-on/puzzle combo from Korea that comes in an 18 piece pack (foam pieces= 6 horses, 6 chickens, 6 turtles). After a little digging around, I learned just how late to the game I am with my Tessell “discovery”. In a Daddy Types feature (from September 2008) Greg informed me that the Tessell won a Kind + Jugend Innovation Award, and it

appears that the Tessell was displayed at the 100% Design London Festival late last year. Humm, looks like I better hit the festival circuit this year (and super-glue Greg’s hotel door closed) to beat him to this stuff in the future.

The Tessell would be a hit in the US, and to be honest…I’m amazed that boutiques around the country aren’t already jam-packed with knockoffs (I mean innovative new designs with totally different animal shapes). It seems like a no-brainer for one of the many “Baby Geniusy/ Brainish/ Einsteiny” brands doesn’t it? Until then, I’m afraid that you’ll have to find someone that speaks Korean to help you place your online order at Lotte.com. Remember where you saw it last!

You know…the dream unit that is totally mobile, large enough to hold every diaper-related accessory you could possibly need, and sturdy enough to change the baby on. Indoor forts can be great fun during winter months, but they tend to take up half the house which doesn’t make for very long lifespans. Designers Josué Gamonal and Vicente Porres of Madrid have found a way around the messy fort dilemma with their award-winning design the Trad Shelter. Part furniture and part fort, the Trad design has a built-in reading light and comes with cozy pillows for quiet time. Clean-up is a breeze for kids of all ages thanks to the Trad’s overhead canopy. I’ll be sure to post an update once I’m able to locate a store carrying the Trad, because that’s a design that parents and kids will love!

Dear IKEA,

Parents around the world (or those near IKEA stores) would love it if you would make kid’s stuff like this. I know that you think that you already do…but you really don’t. Note the way that “Box Chair Storage” uses clean Swedish-like design, but it also helps saves space when not in use. It would break down easily into one of your flat cardboard boxes, and I’m confident that even I could assemble it with an Allen wrench.

I’ll admit that your baby/kids products are priced to sell, but most seem to be made of molded plastic. This is great for bath tubs or “potties”, but I think it’s time to start thinking outside of the yellow box. To pull off this new series, you may need to sign a few partnerships with non-Scandinavian designers like Philippe Starck. I’d also recommend that you shave a few corners off your pieces here and there for safety reasons.  I know this might add to the cost, but you would be surprised at how much Americans will spend to keep their kids from bleeding. I can’t say for sure, but “no bleeding” probably sounds pretty cool in Swedish and it might be a fantastic title for the proposed line!

Chances are good that you ran into Re-Produkte’s super-cool Re-Babe & Re-Tire set in the baby blogs last year (left), but did you know that their Re-Serve highchair are no longer in undercover, super-secret, prototype mode? Apparently you can buy these bad boys online right now in all their stainless steel glory!

Unfortunately, it comes with a hefty price tag (around $230 USD) and you’ll need to order it from Europe. On the other hand, you won’t find any cheap plastic parts so the Re-Serve could last through multiple toddlers. Did I mention that the padded, nylon fabric seats are designed to be easily removed and cleaned?

I know what you mean. Plastic has it’s place, but every now and then you want to invest in a piece of children’s furniture that will be around for years to come. Here are three high-quality pieces that will go the distance!

Hide-n Sit Armchair: This cool chair by Offi Kids has a lift-up seat which offers storage for books or small toys and then easily converts to a stylish chair for you little ones when closed. (available at ModernTots for $119)

Roll-top Chair: Anything with a roll-top gets a “thumbs up” from Dr.MOZ, and if it helps organize toys… it gets a double thumbs-up. This roll-top chair is a toy box when top is open and it becomes a chair when closed. Those with big families will be happy to know that there is also a larger bench version available. (found at 2bmod.com for $175)

The Galap Rocker: Now here’s a classic rocking chair for kids that should take the abuse from any tot and keep on rocking. The Glap Rocker is made of birch wood and comes in five colors. It is created for 2-6 year-olds, but built to hold up to 250 pounds! (available at piccolini for $89)
