The holidays are nearly past us, but I had to take a vacation from my vacation to post a quick poll. How many of you know about Emmet Otter’s Jugband Christmas? I thought Emmet Otter was a Jim Henson classic enjoyed by all during the holidays, but I constantly

receive blank stares when mentioning it as a favorite.

If you’ve run a Google search lately, you probably learned that Sesame Street is celebrating 40 seasons on air on November 10th! I couldn’t let Big Bird’s birthday pass without a shout-out to everyone on 123 Sesame Street, so here’s a best of collection starting from their 1969 debut.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the last episode of the PBS favorite Reading Rainbow hosted by LeVar Burton airs today. Apparently, no one wanted to cover the six-figure fees needed to continue the third longest-running children’s show in PBS history. Despite it’s popularity (only Sesame Street and Mister Rogers ran longer), the show’s focus

of teaching the love of reading will make way for the more modern approach (read “approach funded by Dept. of Ed.”) which is teaching the mechanics of reading. On that note, if PBS can develop a show based on mechanics that runs half as long as Reading Rainbow’s 26 years on air…I’ll be floored.

It seems like a short-sided move to cancel one of the PBS’s most popular shows in history, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Reading Rainbow on a different network in the future. Who knows…perhaps one of the execs at Nickelodeon will take note of it’s popularity with parents through the decades, see today’s response to the news on Twitter, and do the math.

This post’s title may seem obvious to many of you, but a study released this morning by AAP’s Pediatrics (download study PDF) shows that many major magazines are confusing the issue with ads depicting unsafe infant sleeping positions and unsafe sleeping environments. The study included 391 pictures from 28 major magazines (5 million +
circulation to qualify as “major”) marketed to women of childbearing age of 20-40 years old showed:

• More than one third of pictures of sleeping infants in magazines geared toward childbearing women demonstrated infants in an inappropriate sleep position.

• Two thirds of pictures of infant sleep environments were not consistent with AAP recommendations.

• Messages in the media that are inconsistent with health care messages create confusion and misinformation about infant sleep safety and may lead inadvertently to unsafe practices.

Have you noticed advertisements showing babies sleeping in unsafe positions, or sleeping in cribs with dangerous plush bedding? Basing movies on successful toys seems to be the trend these days (Transformers, G.I. Joe, etc), but would you believe that Warner Brothers has a movie in development staring Lego building blocks? Plot details haven’t yet been released (image above is not from the movie), but the Lego movie has been in development for more than a year

according to a recent piece in Variety.

I can’t imagine a Lego movie really captivating audiences, but I suppose there are quite a few characters and themes to choose from in the Lego Universe…you never know. What do you think parents? Will your kids be excited to see a Lego movie?
