As a general rule, I like to keep things clean but this parenting video (not safe for work)  is just too perfect to ignore. If you are a new parent that frequents public parks, you’ll eventually have a conversation with a perfect stranger covering all the hot topics

(breastfeeding, sleep sharing, immunizations, TV, developmental milestones, etc.) that will end up just about as good as this does.

There’s nothing quite as funny as seeing our parents in photos long, long before they had kids. It can be hard to imagine our parents living footloose and fancy-free, but make no mistake my friends…they too were awesome before you came around. If you don’t believe me, just visit My Parents Were Awesome and I think you’ll see what I mean.

Something to keep in mind while you are posing for pictures with carrot sticks in your nose isn’t it? Have a great time with the family this holiday weekend everyone.

Is it true that my newborn’s vision is too poor to see my face? If so, at what point would he be able to recognize me?

Hi Daddy Shawn,

It’s true that your newborn lacks the focus to see facial details when first born, but he can

definitely see enough of you to know you are there. See the description below along with the graphic example above to help determine how clearly your newborn will be able to see during development:

• Newborns: are able to see light and blurry shapes. He’ll see your head and outlines of facial features, but will be unable to control his focus as adults do for months to come.

• Month 2: brings an increasing ability make eye contact and to notice details in your face. You’ll still look blurry, but he’s well on his way to seeing things the way you do.

• Month 4: brings the ability to recognize you and other family members! He’ll see things in great detail compared to previous months and you’ll notice that he grabs things around him thanks to his new depth perception.

• Months 6-8: bring a better ability to track objects in the world around him. He’s not quite achieved 20/20 vision, but he’s increasingly interested in patterns and can distinguish objects, people, and facial expressions from greater distances.

Thanks for the great question Shawn and don’t forget that babies can also judge the world around them with their hearing. He may not be able to see you with great detail yet, but he’s been listing to voices from the womb and will recognize yours as a friendly one.

Car seats were designed to provide the optimal upright angle needed to survive car wrecks, but not to be used as cribs in the home as many parents are now using them. A Pediatrics study reviewed a small sample of 200 two-day-old newborns and found that oxygen levels where slightly lower for infants sitting in a car safety seats for sixty minutes

compared to infants sleeping in hospital cribs. Experts agree that babies shouldn’t be unnecessarily restricted in car seats at home because healthy oxygen levels are needed for proper development.

I know what you’re thinking…it’s been ages since I’ve featured a useful and affordable “must have” baby invention for new parents. I’m afraid you’ll need to try again tomorrow because today’s strange and interesting find is the Why Cry Baby Analyzer now available for $100 on Amazon! This gadget monitors your baby’s cry to tell you if she is hungry, tired, bored,

stressed, or annoyed. I’m not sure what the monitor will do if the baby is annoyed from hunger or cries for a variety of other possible reasons, but it is advertised to be over 90% effective (according to Amazon.com description) when used in conjunction with a provided symptoms chart.

The BubLuv SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) monitoring device is a concept design by Queensland University of Technology student Michael Geedrick that we’re all hoping makes it out onto the market one day soon. When the baby sleeps, the BubLuv reads her carbon dioxide and oxygen concentrations using a co-oximeter in the ankle bracelet and

alerts parents when dangerous situations arise by transmitting warning signals to a bedside monitor. 

Perhaps the BubLuv will prove to be the first step towards similar “smart cribs” and related sleeping garments one day as well. I’ll keep an eye on BubLuv developments and will be sure to let you know if/when they are available for purchase.
